Opportunity Solution Tree

Prevents teams from falling in love with a single feature solution and keeps the focus on user outcomes over feature outputs.

Input

A strategic business objective and user research datasets.

Output

A visual solution tree linking business outcomes, user opportunities, and validated product solutions.

1. Align on a Clear Outcome

Start at the top of the tree by defining a single business outcome you want to drive (e.g. 'Increase 30-day user retention by 10%').

2. Map Opportunities based on Research

Branch out from the outcome into opportunities (user needs, pain points, desires) discovered during interviews and research. Frame these as opportunities rather than features.

3. Brainstorm Solutions and Design Experiments

Under each opportunity, branch out into multiple potential solutions, and define quick experiments underneath to validate them before committing to code.
